Inflamed tonsil (white areas, lower centre) in a 19-year-old woman's throat. This is unilateral tonsillitis, where only the tonsil area on one side of the throat is inflamed. The tonsils are areas of lymphoid tissue either side of the throat. They can become swollen in response to a bacterial or viral infection, and if this happens regularly, they may be removed.
