This axial (cross sectional) contrast enhanced CT of the neck in a person who previously underwent complete thyroidectomy shows a small nodule of ectopic thyroid tissue (red arrow). Sometimes small remnants of normal thyroid tissue can enlarge, especially if the person has undergone complete thyroidectomy. These remnants can occur anywhere along the normal descent from the foramen cecum (at the tongue base) to the normal position of thyroid tissue more inferirally in the neck.
