Swollen eye in thyrotoxicosis. Bulging left eye of a 58 year old man with thyrotoxicosis (overactive thyroid gland) after being treated for tongue cancer (carcinoma). The eye is bulging (exophthalmos) due to pressure from swollen tissue behind the eye. Treatment includes drugs or surgery, either to suppress thyroid activity or to relieve pressure behind the eye.
