Urticaria (also called hives or nettle rash) affecting the back of a young woman's legs with red round wheals. The inflammation develops as an allergic reaction which ranges in size from small spots to patches several inches across; it is intensely itchy & lasts anything from a few hours to several days. The cause is a sensitivity to certain foods, such as strawberries or shellfish.
