Skin disorder. Child affected by urticaria on his leg, also known as nettle rash or hives, which was triggered by an allergic reaction to an unknown factor. It is characterised by itchy wheals, raised white or yellow lumps, surrounded by an area of red inflammation. The cause of urticaria is often not known. Chemicals such as food additives or colorants and drugs such as penicillin and aspirin are known to cause this allergic reaction. Urticaria may also be caused by exposure to heat, cold or sunlight. The reaction usually lasts for no more than a few hours and the itching is relieved by applying calamine lotion or by taking antihistamine drugs.
