Ulcerated pressure sore. Pressure sores, or bedsores, are seen in patients who are bed-ridden and immobile, especially stroke or spinal injury victims who may have lost pain sensation in the skin. Constant pressure and abrasion of the skin turns it red at first. This later turns purple before the skin breaks down and forms an open sore. This may become infected, forming a decubitus ulcer. Deep, chronic ulcers need treatment with antibiotic drugs, and may later require plastic surgery.
