Caption

Pressure sore of heel. Close up of a slowly healing, deep ulcer on the heel of a patient, with a dark brown scab at its centre. The circular lesion has well defined margins where thick, yellow-green pus is forming. The skin immediately surrounding the sore is red and flaky. The general condition of this patient's skin is dry and abnormally thin (atrophic). Pressure sores develop on the skin of patients who are bedridden, unconscious or immobile. Prevention is better than cure. Regular turning, careful hygiene of common sites and barrier creams may be used to stop the skin breaking down. Sheepskin, cushions and special matresses are also used as precautions.
