Stomach ulcer. Endoscope image of a small stomach (gastric) ulcer. Otherwise known as a peptic ulcer. The ulcer is seen as the dark pit or crater which may be due to clotted blood, with swelling around it. An ulcer is a disruption of the lining of the stomach caused by digestion of the mucosa (lining membrane) by acid, pepsin and bile. Causes of gastric ulcers are related to diet, alcohol consumption, stress and certain drugs. Bleeding, perforation and obstruction due to scarring may occur as complications. Symptoms are alleviated by antacid medicines; severe cases may require stomach surgery.
