Varicose ulcer. Illustration of a human leg with a large open ulcer and varicose veins. The varicose veins (blue) are shown in section above the ulcer. Leg ulcers are chronic open sores caused by poor blood supply in the leg. In this case they have been caused by varicose veins, where valves inside the vein fail to work, preventing blood from draining properly from the lower leg. Affected veins become engorged with blood and swollen. Treatment of varicose veins depends upon their severity: some patients benefit from exercising and wearing an elastic stocking, while others re- quire surgery to remove or seal the vein.
