Foot ulcer. Close-up of an infected ulcer on the foot of an 88 year-old man. The ulcer is a large pus filled open sore on the surface of the skin. The surrounding skin is red & inflamed. This ulcer started as a trauma to the foot (such as a cut or graze) that has become infected with bacteria. Treatment involves prescribing antibiotics (antibacterial) or antimicrobial drugs. Ulcers are open sores on the skin which cause the destruction of surface tissue. They are usually found on the legs and feet and are caused either by trauma (as here) or poor blood supply.
