Venous ulcer on the leg of a 76-year-old man. An ulcer is an open sore on the skin which has failed to heal. This venous ulcer (also known as a varicose ulcer) formed as a result of a restriction in the oxygen supply to the skin on the leg, caused by varicose veins. Varicose veins are distended, lengthened and tortuous veins in the legs which develop when the valves inside the veins become defective. Venous ulcers are treated by dressing the affected area and by taking antibiotics to combat bacterial infection.
