Ulcer on the toe of a 73-year-old male smoker with non- insulin-dependent (type two) diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). Ulcers such as this form due to an impaired blood supply to the affected area. The skin and surrounding tissues die (necrosis), leaving the area open to infection. Treatment is aimed at the underlying cause. Antibiotic drugs along with regular cleaning and dressing of the ulcer hasten its healing.
