Diabetic ulcer on the heel of a 37 year old woman. The ulcer has become infected and filled with pus. The patient has type 1 diabetes mellitus, a condition in which the pancreas does not produce the hormone insulin, which regulates blood sugar levels. Ulcers are a fairly common complication of diabetes as it can lead to neuropathy (nerve damage) and the breakdown of small blood vessels, both of which are risk factors for ulcers. Treatment is with antibiotics and regular cleansing of the wound.
