Infected toe caused by diabetes. Infected ulcer on the big toe of a 40 year old woman with Type 1 diabetes mellitus. An ulcer is an open sore that does not heal and may turn necrotic, leading to gangrene (localised tissue death). Type 1 diabetes results from the body's inability to produce the hormone insulin, which regulates blood sugar levels. It can lead to neuropathy (nerve damage) and peripheral vascular disease, both risk factors for the development of ulcers.
