Mosquito identification. Researcher preparing night-biting mosquitoes for identification under a light microscope. Any Anopheles mosquitoes will be examined to see if they are carrying Plasmodium sp., the malaria parasite. Sampling for malaria- carrying mosquitoes enables effective disease control measures, such as the spraying of insecticide, to be implemented when and where necessary. Malaria causes severe fever and can be fatal in some cases through damage to the liver, kidney, brain or bloodstream. Photographed in Papua New Guinea.
