Mosquito trap. Mosquitoes are attracted to the foul-smelling liquid in the blue bowl. A central fan then sucks them up the tube to be trapped in the mesh netting. The mosquitoes will be tested for the larvae of the nemotode worm that causes lymphatic filariasis. They transmit them to humans through their bite. Lymphatic filariasis is not fatal, but it causes widespread suffering in tropical regions due to the grossly swollen limbs (elephantiasis) that can result. If mosquitoes are found to be infectious, then eradication efforts can be increased. Photographed in Haiti.
