Infected insect sting on hand. Swollen hand (at left) of a woman aged 40 years, due to an insect sting or bite that has become infected. The knuckles and base of the fingers are red and inflamed. A sting or bite may, as here, become infected due to the insect introducing bacteria into the wound, or by the patient scratching the wound. Treatment includes removing the sting if it is embedded, washing the wound, applying a hydro- cortisone cream to reduce swelling, and treating the infection. Painkiller drugs may be required.
