The face of an elderly woman partly covered by bruises following a fall. The discoloration of the skin is caused by the escape of blood from ruptured underlying vessels. Bruises are initially red or pink and gradually become green-yellow as the haemoglobin, a substance contained within the red blood cells, breaks down chemically and is absorbed.
