Coloured X-ray of a dislocation of the elbow joint, the ball & socket joint between the humerus (top left), the ulna (bottom) and the radius (above the ulna). In normal conditions the bottom, ball-like part of the humerus fits into the socket of the ulna and the three bones are kept in place by ligaments. A dislocation often also involves the fracture of one of the bones involved. The treatment consists of manipulating the bones back into their correct position which may require a surgical operation. The joint is then immobilised by means of a splint or plaster cast in order to allow the healing to occur without disturbance.
