Broken upper armbone. Coloured X-ray image showing a severe compound fracture of the shaft of a humerus. This type of fracture is usually accompanied by severe pain, swelling and tenderness at the affected site. If a piece of the bone punctures the skin there is a high risk of infection. Most fractures of the humerus heal in six to eight weeks.
