Fractured femur. False-colour X-ray showing a repaired broken femur. The bone has been surgically immobilised by the insertion of a long metal pin fixed to the bone with metal screws. The fracture of the femur is very common in elderly people, expecially in women suffering from osteoporosis (thinning of the bone) and usually affects the neck of the femur. The fracture of the shaft of the femur usually occurs when the bone is subjected to extreme force. In most cases the bone ends are considerably displaced causing severe pain, tenderness and swelling.
