A large haematoma seen on the leg of a patient. The haematoma resulted from the kick of a horse and it is seen here a few hours after the injury occurred. The discoloration of the skin is caused by the escape of blood from ruptured underlying vessels. The haematoma is initially red or pink and gradually becomes green-yellow as the haemoglobin contained in the blood breaks down chemically and is absorbed.
