Caption

Black eye. Close-up of a black eye (periorbital bruising). Black eyes are caused by injuries that rupture small blood vessels in the skin near the eyes. The leaking blood collects in the loose, transparent tissue under the eye, showing up conspicuously. As the blood breaks down its colour changes from red and black to blue and green, before fading. Black eyes are usually left to heal naturally, although a cold compress may help to relieve discomfort.
