Eye injury. Close-up of bruising and laceration around the upper eyelid of a 14- year-old boy, caused by a blow to the eye from a hockey stick. Any direct blow to the eye damages small blood vessels in the surrounding soft tissue, causing blood to leak and collect there. The eye itself often escapes serious injury thanks to protection by the surrounding bone and the rapid lid-squeeze reflex.
