Eye injury. Close-up of the red and bruised eye of a 52 year-old man caused by a blow from a tennis ball. Any direct blow to the eye damages small blood vessels in the surrounding soft tissue, causing blood to leak and collect there. The eye itself often escapes serious injury thanks to protection by the surrounding bone and the rapid lid-squeeze reflex.
