Incisional hernia. View of a large swelling on the abdomen of an 85 year-old female patient, known as an incisional hernia. This hernia was caused by a weakness in the abdominal wall after the patient underwent a colostomy operation. A colostomy bag is seen attached to the patient. A hernia is a protrusion of an organ or tissue through a weak area of muscle that would normally contain it. In this case, a large amount of the intestines are bulging through the abdominal wall. Correction requires using mesh to strengthen the wall. A colostomy is the surgical removal of all or part of the colon. A colostomy bag collects waste during recovery.
