Infected catheter. View of an infected catheter in the abdomen of a 76 year old man. This is a suprapubic catheter, which is placed into the bladder to allow the patient to drain urine in the case of a blockage of the urethra. Catheters may become infected if the area is not kept extremely clean. There is a risk of the infection spreading to the inside of the body through the catheter's entry site. Treatment is with antibiotics.
