Bruised buttock. Heavily bruised buttock of a 41 year old woman caused by a fall down stairs. Bruising occurs when capillaries (small blood vessels) under the skin are ruptured, usually by an impact. Blood flows into spaces under the skin, giving the area a dark red colour. As the blood ages, the colour changes to dark purple, and then to yellow as the pigment is broken down.
