Sprained ankle of an 18-year-old woman. A sprain is a tearing or stretching of the ligaments that hold together the bone ends in a joint. The fibrous capsule that encloses the joint may also be damaged. The most common site for a sprain is the ankle. An X-ray of the ankle will determine if it is broken. Treatment of the sprain includes reducing the swelling with ice packs, resting the joint and the use of painkilling drugs.
