Effusion of the shoulder of a 76 year old man. Effusion is the accumulation of fluid in a joint, which causes swelling and pain, and limits the movement of the joint. Painkillers and anti- inflammatory drugs can relieve the symptoms. Rest and bandaging can help to reduce the swelling, although the fluid may have to be drawn out with a syringe in some cases. Physiotherapy may be required to fully restore joint mobility.
