Broken thigh bone. Coloured X-ray of a fractured thigh bone (femur). The pieces of bone either side of the fracture site have completely separated and may have penetrated the skin. Such exposure of the bone could lead to a serious bone infection. The bone will need to be reset in its correct position and immobilised by the use of an internal pin and an external cast. The bone will take several weeks to heal, depending upon the age and health of the patient. This is a frontal view of the left hip.
