Caption

Elbow fracture, X-ray. The bone fracture is in the upper arm bone (humerus, upper frame), just above the elbow. It is clearly seen as the discontinuity in the otherwise smooth bone surface. The elbow joint is where the humerus joins to the lower arm bones (radius and ulna, lower right). One way of assisting the healing process is to implant metal screws or plates, a process known as pinning, to secure the bone fragments in the correct alignment while they heal. For X-rays of the pinned elbow from two different angles, see images M330/1066 and M330/1067.
