Sprained wrist. Cold pack being used to reduce the swelling from a sprained wrist. A sprain is an injury where the muscles, ligaments and tendons of a joint have been excessively stretched. This can lead to swelling and pain. The pain can be numbed by the use of a cold pack, and the cold can also trigger the slowing or reversal of some of the physiological responses to the initial injury.
