Broken neck. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a sagittal (side) view of a 34-year- old male's fractured and dislocated neck (orange). He was involved in a cycling accident during which he damaged two of his cervical vertebrae (C5 and C6). The purpose of the cervical vertebrae is to protect the spinal cord and skull, and allow diverse head movements. Trauma to this area can lead to serious or life-threatening injury.
