Bruised and fractured ribs of a 48-year-old man, ten days after a fall. The ribs are easily fractured by a fall or blow. Severe pain results, which becomes worse when breathing deeply. Most rib fractures do not result in mis-alignment of the bone ends and heal easily without treatment other than painkillers. If bone is displaced by the fracture there is a risk that a lung may be pierced, which can lead to collapse of the damaged lung.
