Caption

Fractured arm. Coloured X-ray of a fractured upper arm bone (humerus). The head of the humerus has fractured and become displaced. The head of the humerus articulates with the shoulder blade (scapula, right), forming a ball and socket joint. Above the scapula is the collar bone (clavicle), which articulates with the scapula. The bone will be immobilised, either externally, using a cast, or internally, using metal pins, to allow it to heal. It is important that a bone is correctly aligned if it is to heal properly and avoid future complications.
