Caption

Pinned ankle fracture. Coloured X-ray of pins that have been used to repair fractured ankle bones. The pins (white) are holding together a fracture of the internal malleolus, the bony projection of the tibia, on the inside of the ankle. This is a side view of the right ankle. The foot bones are at bottom, with the heel at right. The leg bones are at top. Old screw holes (upper right) show where an old fracture was repaired in the shaft of the fibula. The fibula is the thinner of the two lower leg bones; the tibia is the thicker of the two lower leg bones.
