Colles' wrist fracture. Coloured X-ray of the hand and wrist bones of a patient with a type of wrist fracture known as a Colles' fracture. This view is of the left hand from above. The fractured area is across lower centre. The ends of the arm bones (ulna and radius, bottom) have been broken and displaced upwards from the wrist bones. This type of fracture is usually caused by using the hand to break a fall. This particular patient also has osteoporosis, a condition where loss of bone mass and bone density weakens the bones, making such fractures more likely.
