Healing wound. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a healing wound on the skin. The red blood cells (erythrocytes) are trapped in a mesh of the protein fibrin, which forms a clot. The clot helps to prevent any further blood loss. Fibrin is produced when blood is exposed to the air. Magnification: x200 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
