Caption

Fractured arm. Coloured X-ray of a side view of a fractured upper arm bone (humerus). The fracture is at centre near the head of the bone. At right is the spine and at upper right is the shoulder blade (scapula), which articulates with the humerus, forming a ball and socket joint. The bone will be immobilised, either externally, using a cast, or internally, using metal pins, to allow it to heal. It is important that a bone is correctly aligned if it is to heal properly and avoid future complications.
