Caption

Pinned broken spine. Coloured three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) scan of the pinned fractured spine of a 60 year old. The fracture is in the second lumbar vertebra (the fourth block from the bottom). It is a compression fracture, where the vertebra collapses, and is often caused by osteoporosis. The pins have been inserted to stabilise the bones while they heal.
