Fractured spine. Coloured profile computed tomography (CT) scan of the lower back of a 50 year old with a fractured spine. This is a compression fracture, a collapse of the second lumber vertebra (third block from top). Compression fractures may be caused by injury or diseases, such as osteoporosis, that weaken bone. Treatment is with analgesic drugs and rest. In severe cases surgery may be needed.
