Perforated nasal septum. Forceps holding open a nostril to give a view of a hole in the nasal septum of an 80 year old woman. The septum is the dividing wall inside the nose. Perforation can arise due to trauma, drug abuse, an abscess or certain diseases, such as Wegner granulomatosis. Treatment includes surgical closure, which often fails, or insertion of a specially designed septal button in the hole.
