Strangulated hernia in an 89 year old woman's abdomen. A hernia is the protrusion of an organ or tissue through an abnormal opening. In this case the intestines are protruding through the abdominal wall muscles. This hernia has become strangulated, that is, had its blood supply cut off. This is a medical emergency as lack of blood leads to tissue death and so requires immediate surgical repair.
