Incisional hernia. Bulge in the abdomen of a 62 year old man due to an incisional hernia. A hernia is the protrusion of an organ or tissue through an abnormal opening. This hernia has arisen from a weakness caused by a surgical incision to treat peritonitis (inflammation of the membrane lining the abdominal cavity) and has caused the intestines to protrude through the abdominal wall. Treatment is with pushing the intestines back through the wall and repairing the opening in it.
