Pinned broken leg. Coloured frontal X-ray of the fractured left femur (thigh bone) of a 35-year-old woman. The femur has been surgically immobilised by inserting a metal plate, fixed with screws, down the length of the femur. This is known as internal fixation. It is important that a bone is correctly aligned if it is to heal properly and avoid future complications. It can take up to six months for a femur to heal, as it is a weight- bearing bone.
