Broken leg. Frontal X-ray of the fractured left femur (thigh bone) of a 56-year-old man. The fracture is seen running across the bone at centre right. The bone will be immobilised either externally by using a cast, or internally by using metal pins to allow it to heal. It is important that a bone is correctly aligned if it is heal properly and avoid future complications. The femur can take up to six months to heal, as it is a weight-bearing bone.
