Caption

Pinned ankle fracture. Frontal X-ray of a metal plate and screws (white) in a 53 year old woman's fractured left ankle. The fracture is in the malleolus (bony projection at the end of a bone) of the fibula (thinner bone at right). The plate was surgically screwed to the fibula in order to immobilise the bone once the fracture had been realigned and to make sure that it fuses properly. The larger bone to the left of the fibula is the tibia, or shin bone. The foot bones are seen at bottom.
