Muscle wasting. Hand of a 57-year-old man showing wasting of muscles around the thumb (left). Muscle wasting can result from damage to the nerves, extended inactivity, or an inherited disorder such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy. In this case, a lesion has developed in the ulnar nerves as a result of cubital tunnel syndrome, preventing the nerves from functioning normally.
