Fractured leg. Knee of a 53 year old woman with a lateral tibial plateau fracture. The tibial plateau is the end of the tibia (shin bone) that articulates with the femur (thigh bone) to form the knee joint. Knee fractures are caused by heavy blows to the knee, often sustained during car accidents, whilst playing sports, or during a fall. In this case, it was caused by being knocked over by a dog. Treatment is usually by surgical stabilisation of the joint using metal pins.
